Daniel Block suggests the following five questions to ask when studying narrative in the Old Testament to help the reader understand the theology of the text:

1. What does this passage tell us about God?
2. What does it tell us about the world and society in general?
3. What does it tell us about the human condition, the nature of sin, the destiny of humankind?
4. What does it tell us about the way God relates to human beings?
5. What does it tell us about an appropriate ethical and spiritual response to the work of God in one’s life?
